    • JOHN S. BRADFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
      History

John S. Bradfield Elementary School, built in 1926, was the third school in the Highland Park School District. The school was named for early settler and school board member John Sherman Bradfield, not only for his length of service (1917-1933), but also for his wisdom and devotion to schools and to his community.

A 200 ft. x 800 ft. piece of land located in what was known as the Country Club section of Highland Park West was purchased by HPISD on May 22, 1924 for $16,000. As a cost-saving measure, Bradfield and University Park were built from one set of plans designed by architects Otto H. Lang and Franch Witchell. Rogers and O'Rourke received the main building contract, and Bradfield was constructed for approximately $125,000.

In the early days at Bradfield, scholarship was recognized by small pins given by the top two jewelry firms of the day in Dallas. Linz pins were awarded to those students averaging 90 or above for the year, and those averaging above 85 received Everts Awards.

On September 27, 1967, at 3:30 P.M., an LTV plane crashed on Mockingbird Lane adjacent to the north side of Bradfield and bounced towards the building, burning the bike rack area and music room. Because the accident occurred on an early dismissal day, children had already left, and a possible catastrophe was avoided. Seven people on the plane lost their lives.

In 1987, Bradfield was the only school in the United States named by President Ronald Reagan as the recipient of a citation for outstanding volunteer service by students and staff.

In 2001, Bradfield Elementary received special recognition by the Commissioner of Education, Jim Nelson, for being one of eight schools in Texas to receive an 'Exemplary' rating every year for the past nine years when the rating system was established.

On November 6, 2003, Bradfield Elementary was named to the statewide Honor Roll Schools list by Just for the Kids and the Texas Business and Education Coalition for its consistently outstanding performance in educating students.
